Is it just me or does the functioning of the Indian government seem totally ridiculous?

I've never understood the concept of a company where it's practically impossible for anyone to get fired, regardless of how good or bad they are at work. Nor can i understand the mentality of a person who applies for a government job for the sole purpose of this so-called "job security" where he, once into the job, has absolutely no accountability and almost zero probability of getting fired or laid off. Not only that, if he sticks around long enough, they're going to continue paying him for as long as he lives, even after he's stopped working.

I think this is exactly what breeds the frustratingly sloppy attitude of employees at any government or municipal run office. One visit to the local RTO and you'll know exactly what i mean. I don't really blame the employees that much. It's simply human nature, at least for the larger section of society, to be content with a reasonable salary and to have their basic necessities met without having to put in too much effort.

To add to this, the inherently fatalistic and often lazy desi will more often than not, be rather unhappy to have to even perform his regular duties, going by the looks that a common man receives when he approaches a counter behind which one or more such specimens may be seated. These looks can only be melted when the employee in question is either spoken to in his or her mother tongue, and/or offered a small bribe in exchange for them to do their job.

I blame this on the lack of accountability in the system. And i believe that this until this changes, we're certainly not going to be very competitive as a nation. I believe the need of the hour is privatization, which automatically brings in this sense of accountability and is the very reason why the private sector is so much more successful, efficient and transparent, not to mention being a whole lot less corrupt. Even scams on the scale of the Satyam fiasco cannot compare with the levels of corruption within the Indian government.

I also know that there exists a section of employees who take pride in their work and it is solely on their shoulders that our monolithic government machinery chugs along year after year. Unfortunately, this section, as of now, is rather too small to be of any consequence or to be taken seriously by the young, dynamic and educated section of today's society.
