The Chronicles of North Carolina - The Journey

Well it took us the better part of 40 hours to get here, having endured all of 4 airports, 3 aircraft of tremendously varying sizes and 2 burger king outlets. Not that i was complaining, of course. Efficiently sustaining myself on burgers, onion rings, and gallons of coke, i could probably have gone another 40 hours quite comfortably. (Do note the traditional all-American diet that i was clinging to so stringently).
The thing about being within the confines of an airport is that feeling you get of being in some kind of time warp. It's always night and it's always day. Which in turn helps in getting rid of any remnants of jetlag you're expected to have by the time you reach the other side of the world. Flying westward on a 16 hour flight originating in Bombay that starts at about midnight local time, gives you this tremendously weird stretch of time where it's dark for as long you're flying, (except for an odd couple of hours of mild brightness while the aircraft flies over scandinavia). Now this makes for something like a 34 hour day, once you take into account the time difference, and I found myself sadistically compelled to point out this very salient fact to one of my travel mates, who had plans of maintaining her weekly fast on this particular day. All the best with that, i said.
The entertainment on this non-stop flight to the Big Apple was indeed excellent. Which in a way made up for the tremendous lack of eye-candy among the flight attendants. So after sitting through yet another viewing of Pulp Fiction, followed by 2 episodes of House, 3 of Scrubs, and some very appetizing airline food (Honestly, I really don't see what most people dislike about the stuff they serve up there), I closed my eyes and envisioned all the collosal quantities of junk food i was going to consume during the course of the next six weeks. But the real treat was at the end of the flight, when as we descended into New York, those of us awake and watching the eastern horizon, were welcomed by this fiery and mesmerizing sunrise that no camera on earth could possibly have done justice to. Welcome to America, i guess!
